Even though there's not enough snow to take out a full team of dogs on sleds, we just couldn't help ourselves. Bring on the snow!
Amy loves snowbathing. Watch out America's Next Top Model contenders.
There's something so simultaneously mesmerizing and exhilarating about watching a team of dogs run through the night. Perhaps it's the complete darkness with only a tunnel of light illuminating the team. Perhaps it's the rhythmic movements of each dog's gait. Whatever the reason, the effect causes you to focus solely on the dogs in front of you, watching their movements as an hour passes by in what feels like one minute. Occasionally I glance off the trail, and the past few nights, tracks have revealed that mushers are not the only ones in the woods of Two Rivers. Grouse tracks, hare tracks, moose tracks, and massive grizzly bear tracks are crisscrossing the trail. Nothing gives chills like sign of grizzly bear close by!
All the trails are now blanketed in a layer of snow creating a nice base for the winter. I'm pretty sure mushers are some of the few people that are excited by the early season snow!

This weekend, we enjoyed the hospitality of Squid Acres Kennel and trained on some new trails in Eureka for a couple of days. Upon returning home, we were welcomed with several inches of new SNOW!!
With a winter weather advisory for the next couple days, the cabin is finished just in time! We obviously have a little cleanup left and some minor "decorating," but Riley tried out the cabin last night and said it was comfy and warm.
Curious how we built the cabin? The following video gives you a glimpse of some of the steps involved in building a small log cabin. After a day at the university or afternoon in the office, I loved coming home and learning with my hands. Working outdoors, whether with dogs or timber, adds a different perspective to life. Accounting is a world of numbers and regulations, puzzles and forms in a framework created by society. Wow, have I enjoyed coming home and changing gears to work with the natural world and learn a different set of skills. Thanks to Derek for his patience in teaching me, especially when I found myself focusing in on details (an accountant's fault). He's always been great at focusing on "the big picture," and as he would say, "it's not a grand piano!"
Stay tuned for the final photos of the cabin!
Coot had his three miles of fame today and led the team like a CHAMP! Keep an eye out for this up-and-coming superstar.
